Meeting
Minutes
Monterey Bay
Chapter, U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association
17 January
2008
Meeting Objectives. The USNA Alumni
Association, Monterey Bay Chapter Board met at the Naval
Postgraduate School on 17 January 2008. The meeting was presided
over by Chapter President John Alich. The purpose of the meeting
was to decide whether or not to have a Blue Chip Dinner in
February.
Attendees. John Alich '64, Jim
Egerton '56, Dean Stouffer '96, Matt Boensel ’80 and Greg
Mislick ’80.
Discussion. The meeting was again
devoted to the next Blue Chip Dinner. Dean Stouffer contacted
other USNA alumni in the student body and found almost no
interest in this affair. The decision was made by the board to
cancel plans for this event. Matt Boensel suggested that the
chapter forward a letter of congratulations to local applicants.
He will draft a proposed letter and submit it to John Alich.
John reported that he had ordered thirty nice USNA folders, some
of which could be used to send these letters. The board decided
to solicit names of recent graduates to be used as points of
contacts in case the applicants wanted to find out more
information about the Academy.
John Alich reported that he
had been asked by the CSUMB golf team if the chapter would like
to sponsor a luncheon when the USNA golf team comes to Monterey
to play CSUMB in March. The board voted not to do so. The
suggestion was made to try to schedule a couple of hours for the
USNA team to visit NPS, possibly for lunch, and possibly to
arrange for applicants to join in this function so they would
have direct interaction with current midshipmen. Greg Mislick
volunteered to organize such an affair.
Greg Mislick and Dean Stouffer
will attend the next Commanders Cup event at DLI.
Members of the board stated
that we need a better, more direct way to communicate with NPS
students who are USNA grads.
Minutes. The minutes of the last
meeting were unanimously approved by the Board members present.

Pagnillo was not present.
New Business. None

Because of low turnout at the board meeting, and general low
interest in chapter activities, the decision was made to put
plans for the Blue Chip Dinner on hold. Dean Stouffer will
contact other USNA alumni in the student body to see if there is
sufficient interest to attract enough young attendees to make
the dinner worthwhile, or to determine if there is a better
venue to connect recent graduates with the candidates. He will
report back to John Alich. The results will be discussed at the
next board meeting at which time the decision will be made on
how to proceed.

February 2008. Scott Jasper will
contact Rancho Canada to check on availability. The board
decided to adopt a sliding scale of prices for the dinner to

Council of Chapter Presidents Charter.
Jim Egerton reported that he attended the annual International

The class presidents voted it down, in his opinion, because of
the heavy-handed way it was presented in the email to chapter
presidents.

Miller will be in charge of the tournament this year. It will be
held earlier than Veterans Day because of the upcoming closure
of the Monterey Pines golf course for renovation.
Wine Tasting/Summer Events.
Pag Pagnillo has arranged for a chapter wine tasting event
similar to last year’s at Ventana Winery on 3 August. The board
members voted to charge $5 per person for students, $10 each for
non-students, and $15 each for others. The invitation will state
that the tasting room is near Tarpy’s Restaurant. John Alich
will email members to announce the event.
Treasurer's Report.
Richard Pagnillo reported that the chapter
treasury balance was still $3,164.92.
Academy Awareness Representative.
Jim Egerton reported that the purpose of the Academy Awareness
Representative was not to solicit inductees for the Naval
Academy, but to raise the general awareness and knowledge about
the Academy in the local community by contact with government
officials, media, and other appropriate entities. He passed the
literature concerning this position to John Alich. Matt Boensel
volunteered to look into this with a view toward assuming the
position. Norm Channel agreed to assist him.

has enough money to supplement the cost, which is expected to be
about $15 per person. The invitation will state that the tasting
room is near Tarpy’s Restaurant, and give a phone number so that
attendees can make reservations if they desire to stay for
dinner. Jim Egerton checked the Monterey schedule and found
nothing significant to conflict with this date. Pag Pagnillo
will email other board members to confirm the appropriateness of

the cocktail hour, who will also provide a laptop computer and
projector.

Meeting Objectives. The USNA Alumni Association, Monterey Bay
Chapter Board met at the Naval Postgraduate School on 12
December 2006. The meeting was presided over by Chapter
President John Alich. The purposes of the meeting were to
provide an update on the DLI Recognition Program, discuss the
Army/Navy game sale proceeds and plan for the Blue Chip Dinner
and subsequent events.
Attendees. John Alich ‘64, Bob Bourke ’60, Jack Branson ’50,
Norm Channell ’55, Jim Egerton ’56, and Scott Jasper ’80.
Minutes. The minutes of the last meeting were unanimously
approved by the Board members present.
President's Report. John Alich distributed the meeting agenda.
DLI Recognition Program. John Alich reported that he and COL
Tucker Mansager had executed a Memorandum of Understanding
covering the DLI recognition program approved by the Board at
the last meeting. It calls for up to four (4) NCO leadership
awards per quarter provided there are appropriate candidates. He
reported that he has an initial supply of folders from USNA, a
form for the awards certificate and 8 copies of the “Band of
Brothers” series and a commitment from HBO for an additional 88
copies of “Band of Brothers” to be supplied in 2007 for use by
USNAAA and USMAAA. USMAAA has not confirmed that they will use
this as their award. John reiterated the desire for
participation by Board Members and other local graduates to
represent USNAAA at the ceremony. The next Commander’s Cup run
is scheduled for 1600 on February 7th. John Alich proposed that
we write a letter from the Board commending Major Grayson Story
for his efforts to be placed in his record on NPS Foundation
letterhead. The Board approved such a letter but suggested it
should come from NPS. John Alich will draft the letter and Jim
Egerton will take this letter to the Dean of Students for
forwarding to Grayson’s service record.
Army-Navy Game Party. Attendees reported on the event on
December 2nd celebrated in the Trident and El Prado rooms. Jack
Branson and Dick Miller organized the event. The proceeds from
the sale were $252. There are 4 stadium cushions remaining with
a value of $35.85. The golf bag was donated and the cost of the
other items including tax and express shipment was $182.40. The
target was raising $300 to donate to MWR in recognition of their
continued support of the event. Jack Branson discussed this with
MWR and they are unable to accept donations from non-sanctioned
organizations and were not able to permit the planned auction.
We have researched options and we can make a donation to NPS
Foundation which the will pass through to MWR. The Board
approved a donation of $250. This will be sent to the NPS
Foundation for forwarding to MWR.
Blue Chip Dinner. Scott Jasper has reserved Rancho for February
3rd. The menu options have not been finalized but a repeat of
last year’s menu is possible. The price will be ~$40 per person.
John Pfeiffer has said that we have insufficient candidates to
warrant a recognition dinner. He feels recruitment efforts are
on target and no additional support from USNAAA is required.
Currently only three nominations are completed. In view of this,
the board unanimously voted to cancel the Blue Chip Dinner, but
then voted to have a dinner meeting at the same time and place
as an annual social event. It also voted to invite nominated
candidates and their families. John Alich will work on getting a
guest speaker to talk about Iraq/Afghanistan.
Academy Awareness Representative. The chapter’s participation in
this endeavor remains on hold.
Treasurer's Report. Richard Pagnillo was unable to attend. The
chapter treasury balance is $3,169.
Student Orientation Fair. The next student orientation fair at
NPS is Wednesday, 3 January 2007 from 2:00 until 4:00.

the NPS Peacock Room (across from the elevator opposite the Art
Gallery in the basement of Herrmann Hall.) The primary purpose of this meeting
will be to firm up plans for the dinner meeting on 3 February.

14 November 2006
Meeting Objectives. The USNA Alumni Association, Monterey Bay
Chapter Board met at the Naval Postgraduate School on 14
November 2006. The meeting was presided over by Chapter
President John Alich. The purposes of the meeting were to review
the DLI Recognition Program and consider a proposal to formalize
the Chapter’s Participation, and future event status/planning
including the Army/Navy Game and Blue Chip Dinner.
Attendees. John Alich ‘64, Scott Jasper ‘80, Greg Mislick ‘80,
and Richard Pagnillo ‘59.
Minutes. The minutes of the last meeting were unanimously
approved by the Board members present with the only change the
date in the first paragraph to 19 September 2006.
President's Report. John Alich distributed the meeting agenda,
and commented on the success of the Navy team in the annual
Veteran’s day golf match with Army. Dick Miller was recognized
for his efforts in organizing the Navy team. Navy was victorious
9 to 7 closing the gap to 3 to 2 in favor of Army. Dick Miller
received the rotating trophy.
DLI Recognition Program. John Alich reported that he and Major
Grayson Story USMC participated in the 26 October Commander’s
Cup at DLI representing USNAAA Monterey Bay Chapter. The chapter
presented a recognition certificate and book to Petty Officer
Leota Billips USN who was nominated for the NCO outstanding
leadership performance for the quarter. John Alich noted that
the event was outstanding with a reading of the USNA and USMA
mission statements as part of the lead up to the awards. COL
Tucker Mansager gave a talk encouraging consideration of
application to the Academies. Grayson Story has obtained folders
from USNA, drafted an awards certificate and obtained a
commitment from HBO for 96 copies of “Band of Brothers” for use
by USNAAA and USMAAA along with the certificates. The DLI Staff
indicated that they would generally have 4 candidate NCO’s (one
per service) each quarter and encouraged USNAAA Monterey Bay
Chapter to provide four awards. The Board unanimously approved
continuing with this program and awarding up to four (4) NCO
leadership awards per quarter provided there are appropriate
candidates. USMA was well represented including their equivalent
Blue and Gold Officer. The USMA award was presented by COL
Hooper the senior Army/USMA at NPS. For future events we would
like the participation of additional chapter members and the
Blue and Gold Officer. Grayson Story was commended for his
efforts.
Army-Navy Game Party. John Alich reported that the event on
December 2nd will be celebrated in the Trident and El Prado
rooms in a similar fashion to last year. USNAAA Monterey Bay
Chapter will publicize the event. Jack Branson and Dick Miller
have agreed to organize the event. Greg Mislick noted that NFCU
is reducing their commitment to the event and had a request that
we consider providing support. John Alich provided a new USNA
cart golf bag that could be the basis of a raffle or silent
auction at the event. The Board approved spending $150 on
additional USNA items for use in a silent auction with the
target of raising $300 to donate to MWR. It was further
suggested that the type of items should be license plate frames,
stadium seats rather than clothing where size often limits
marketability. As a supplement additional items that chapter
members are willing to donate would be welcome in the silent
auction.
Blue Chip Dinner. The Board unanimously agreed to proceed with
the Blue Chip dinner in 2007 and initiated planning for the 2007
event. The target date is February 3rd the week prior to the
AT&T. There was agreement that Rancho had done a good job and
that we should attempt to continue with them. Scott Jasper will
check with Rancho and try to get a commitment on the date and
menu options. A repeat of last year’s menu would be good. It
probably will have some price increase. Entertainment was
discussed with pros and cons of adding the band with the choir
and it was decided to stay with the choir alone. Scott Jasper
will contact the choir. Pag Pagnillo will look into adding a
color guard as part of the event.
Academy Awareness Representative. The chapter’s participation in
this endeavor remains on hold.
Treasurer's Report. Richard Pagnillo reported that the chapter
treasury balance was $3,169.51.
New Business. There was no new business raised.
Next Meeting. Next Board meeting will be on December 12th at
12:00 in the NPS Faculty Dining Room. The primary purpose of
this meeting will be to plan for the annual Blue Chip dinner.

Navy-Stanford Football Game. John Alich reported that he has
gotten 100 tickets from USNA, and that just under 60 of those
have been sold. NPS MWR is also selling tickets for $60 which
includes transportation. John will send another email to chapter

in the chapter seating section from the NavySports website, MWR
as well as information on the tailgate organized for USNA by the

transportation for $60 each.
DLI Recognition Program. John Alich reported that Grayson Story

Jasper agreed to contact Chateau Julien on available dates and
menu alternatives.
Navy-Stanford Football Game. The San Francisco chapter has been
asked by USNA to organize the official tailgate function for the
game. The Monterey Bay chapter has expressed a desire to

organizing a separate function. An email has been sent to
chapter members with information on how to order football game
tickets in the chapter group from the NavySports website.
DLI Recognition Program. The board reviewed the proposed draft
memorandum of understanding between the Chapter and DLI. The
purpose of the program is to indirectly promote USNA among DLI
students that are potential candidates for USNA. After
discussing this program for a second meeting, the board approved
a motion to pursue this further on the basis that the award
would go to an NCO. How often the award will be given will
depend on the size of the candidate pool and is yet to be
determined. Chris Georgi will circulate an email to determine if
there are Chapter members willing to run the program.
Academy Awareness Representative (AAR.) The Operations and
Facilities Manager of USNAAA has developed a position
description for a AAR with the support of the admissions office.
The chapter has been requested to designate an AAR to work with

Minutes of Meeting
Monterey Bay Chapter , U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association
4 April 2006
Meeting Objectives. The USNA Alumni Association, Monterey
Bay Chapter Board met at the Naval Postgraduate School on 4
April 2006. The meeting was presided over by Chapter President
John Alich. The purposes of the meeting were to discuss
newsletter planning, plan for future Chapter events, and discuss
the DLI Recognition Program.
Attendees. John Alich '64, Jim Egerton '56, Richard Pagnillo
'59, Matt Boensel '80, Don Conrad USMA '63, Chris Georgi '96,
Norm Channel '55, Bob Bourke '60, Dick Miller '50.
President's Report. John reported that he planned to send out a
newsletter to all area graduates updating them on Chapter
activities and requesting a $10 voluntary donation in place of
required dues. This will go out by email to those with email
addresses, and by mail to those we don’t have email addresses
for. We will continue to carefully monitor funds in the treasury
in order to prudently provide monetary support for chapter
activities. This support will include door prizes at events. We
will also ask for memorabilia donations to use as door prizes at
chapter activities.
Joint Service Academy function. We continued discussions from
the last board meeting on this event. The event is being planned
with USMA chapter input provided by Don Conrad, Monterey Bay
USMA Association of Graduates President. It is planned to be an
outdoor activity at 1100-1600 on Armed Forces Day, 20 May. It
was decided to have it at the picnic grounds at Monterey Pines
if it is available with NPS as an alternative. Children will be
welcome. The chapters will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, rolls,
chips, charcoal, soft drinks and water. USNA, USAFA and USMA
families will be asked to pay $10 per family. Matt Boensel will
contact MWR to reserve the space. Chris Georgi will look into
obtaining athletic equipment from MWR. Pag Pagnillo will
evaluate food costs. John Alich and Don Conrad will send the
same email/mail announcing the event. Dick Miller will create a
flyer registration for distribution and posting at various
locations at NPS. This flyer will request replies so we can get
an idea of how many will attend. John will work with Don Conrad
to coordinate the activity with the USMA chapter.
Wine Tasting. The chapter still plans to have a function at a
local winery sometime in the summer.
Navy-Stanford football game. The San Francisco chapter has been
asked by USNA to organize a tailgate function for the game. The
Monterey Bay chapter has expressed a desire to participate,
support and add resources to this rather than organizing a
separate function.
Army-Navy Golf. This is the West Point Association's year to
organize this event. Dick Miller will organize the Navy team.
This event usually occurs on Veteran's Day.
DLI Recognition Program. John Alich will send email to the CO of
DLI to arrange a visit to discuss the local chapter's
participation in this program. Don Conrad supports our
participation with the USMA chapter. One suggested format is for
the USMA chapter to provide awards for Army and Air Force
recipients, and the USNA chapter to award those in the Navy and
Marine Corps.
Treasurer's Report. Chris Georgi reported that the balance is
still $3187.40.
Secretary's Report. Jim Egerton reported that the last two
issues of Shipmate included articles about the local chapter,
and he encouraged others to submit input for future issues. The
deadlines are 16 May for the combined June-July issue, and 15
June for the August issue. There is no input deadline for April.
New Business. None beyond those noted above.
Scheduled Meetings. Next Board meeting will be at 1700 on 7 June
in the NPS Faculty Dining Room.

Minutes of Meeting
Monterey Bay Chapter , U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association
22 February 2006
Meeting Objectives. The USNA Alumni Association, Monterey Bay
Chapter Board met at the Naval Postgraduate School on 22
February 2006. The meeting was presided over by Chapter
President John Alich. The purposes of the meeting were to go
over a recap of the Blue Chip Dinner, discuss website and
shipmate input, and plan for future Chapter events.
Attendees.
John Alich ’64, Jim Egerton ’56, Larry Hart ’62,
Chris Georgi ’96, Matt Boensel ’80, Jack Branson, ’50 and Don
Conrad, West Point ‘63.
President’s Report.
Chapter President John Alich made very
favorable comments about the successful Blue Chip Dinner.
Future Events Plans.
The majority of this discussion centered on
the Joint Service Academy function in May or June. Don Conrad
was enthusiastic about USMA alumni participation. Possibilities
included a reception in a local hotel with no-host bar, or an
outing at a location such as Toro Park, which would afford more
reliable weather. This would include families and a possible
Army-Navy softball game. Don will pursue this with his
organization and report back at a later time. Board and chapter
members are encouraged to submit ideas for the All-Service
Academy event via the website email function.
We are still planning a wine tasting in August; the Army-Navy
golf on Veterans’ day; the Chapter events surrounding the
Navy-Stanford football game on 16 September in Palo Alto; and
the Army-Navy game in December. We also need participation at
the New Student Information Fair on 21 March.
Website and Shipmate Input. Jim Egerton will continue to
maintain the website and coordinate our shipmate articles. He
has submitted two articles since the last board meeting. The
latest one is posted on the web site under Activities. It is the
responsibility of each board and chapter member to provide Jim
input on each of these items. This includes general content
input, suggestions on format and content of the website, and
items and photos for shipmate. They can be forwarded to him
directly or via the website email function.
Treasurer’s Report.
Chris Georgi reported that there is a
balance of $3187.40 in the current account balance. There was an
excess of $615.69 from the Blue Chip Dinner, primarily because
support for candidates and families was oversubscribed. The
intent of raising dues last year was increased sponsorship of
events. The Board agreed in principle that the balance in excess
of $1,000 in the treasury should be used to subsidize the
remaining events this as well as to provide “door prizes” for
event attendees.
There has been no dues call this year, and, in view of this
surplus, the board voted to have no formal dues requirement for
2006. Rather a suggested donation of $10 will be requested.
Chris will prepare the necessary input for the web site
reporting this fact. Additionally a newsletter reporting on
events and plans will be prepared incorporating the donation
request and delivered to all USNA alumni with email or regular
mail addresses in the data base.
DLI Recognition Program. The USMA association of graduates has
implemented a recognition program at DLI. Don Conrad indicated
there is interest on the part of the DLI Commandant to expand
that program including USNAAA Monterey Bay Chapter
participation. Chris Georgi and John Alich will follow up with
DLI and develop a recommendation. This raises the question of
the value of investigating a recognition program at NPS.
Secretary’s Report. Minutes for the 10 January 2006 Board
meeting were approved. Jim Egerton reported that future board
minutes will be posted on the web site rather than printed.
Board members are requested to review them prior to the next
Board meeting.
New Business. None beyond the new initiatives noted above.
Scheduled Meetings. Next Board meeting will be at 1700, Tuesday,
4 April 2006, in the NPS Faculty Dining Room.

10 January 2006
Meeting Objectives. The USNA Alumni Association, Monterey
Bay Chapter Board met at the Naval Postgraduate School on 10
January 2006. The meeting was presided over by Chapter President
John Alich. The purposes of the meeting were to discuss the
upcoming Blue Chip Dinner, discuss Board composition and
officers, report results of the student information fair,
website and shipmate input, and plan for future Chapter events.
Attendees. John Alich ’64, Jim Egerton ’56, Larry Hart ’62, Bob
Bourke ’60, Greg Lask ’96, John Peterson ’63, Chris Georgi ’96,
Norm Channel ’55, John Pfeiffer ’63, Scott Jasper ’80, Greg
Mislick ’80, Rosie Goscinski ’01, and Richard Pagnillo ’59.
President’s Report. Chapter President John Alich made comments
about the Blue Chip Dinner. This item is covered in detail
below.
Three new chapter members signed up at the NPS Student
Information Fair on 4 January. This was at least partially
attributed to the rapport of Chris Georgi with the similar age
students. We will attempt to have representation across relevant
classes at future fairs.
Blue Chip Dinner. John Alich stated that we were off to a good
start on attendees among alumni, but we need more. In addition
to the USNAAA website email Chris Georgi has emailed those not
on the USNAAA list that we have emails for, John Alich has
mailed a package to active members who do not have email, and
the announcement has been posted at NPS. We are particularly
interested in attracting recent graduates and all are encouraged
to contact fellow graduates.
There are seven USNA candidates signed up for the dinner with
six sets of parents, since two of the candidates are twins. We
will attempt to seat them at separate tables of eight with one
candidate and family, and at least one recent graduate. John
Alich will invite Congressman Farr, who has three vacancies this
year, to attend.
The dinner will cost the same as last year, which is $29.45 per
person plus tax and tip, totaling about $37 each. The DLI navy
choir is confirmed for their performance, at a cost of $150. It
is possible that the Navy Brass from NPS will also perform. The
President of NPS may be invited to attend. The fee of $40 will
cover the above plus the cheese and fruit plate.
The event will feature an open bar from 1800-1900 and dinner
from 1900-2030.
John Pfeiffer, the Monterey country Blue and Gold
representative, gave a short presentation of the status of
candidates for the class of 2010. He will attempt to get the
Academy to support the dinner with a representative.
Website and Shipmate Input. As Secretary, Jim Egerton will
continue to maintain the website and coordinate our shipmate
articles. It is the responsibility of each board and chapter
member to provide Jim input on each of these items. This
includes general content input, suggestions on format and
content of the website, and items and photos for shipmate. They
can be forwarded to him directly or via the website email
function.
Treasurer’s Report. Chris Georgi reported that there is a
balance of $2531.71 in the current account balance.
Secretary’s Report. Minutes for the 8 November 2005 Board
meeting were approved. Jim Egerton relieved Norm Channel as
Secretary.
Board Composition and Officers. Jim Egerton relieved Norm
Channel as Secretary. Pag Pagnillo will relieve Chris Georgi as
Treasurer in June 2006.
The Board composition will be revised on the website to reflect
current participation and expressions of interest.
Chapter member comment on these changes are both welcomed and
encouraged.
Future Events Plans. Continued intention is to plan for an
All-Service Academy event in May or June, which Greg Mislik,
Chris Georgi and Rosie Goscinski will pursue; a wine tasting in
August; the Chapter events surrounding the Navy-Stanford
football game on 16 September in Palo Alto; and the Army-Navy
game in December. Board and chapter members are encouraged to
submit ideas for the All-Service Academy event via the website
email function.
New Business. None beyond the new initiatives noted above.

8 Nov 2005
Meeting Objectives. The USNA Alumni Association, Monterey
Bay Chapter Board, met at the Naval Postgraduate School on 8
Nov 2005. The meeting was presided over by Chapter President
John Alich. Purposes of the meeting were to submit Board
officer reports, discuss Board composition and officer
nominations, seek volunteers for the next Student
Information Fair, and plan for future Chapter events.
Attendees. John Alich '64, Jack Branson '50, Norm Channell
'55, Jim Egerton '56, Joe Ekelund ‘49, Chris Georgi ‘96,
Dick Miller ‘50, and Richard Pagnillo ‘59.
President's Report. Chapter President John Alich noted his
concern regarding the limited response to the request for
nominations and volunteers for the Board and officer
positions. Three officer positions (Vice President,
Secretary, and Treasurer) will become vacant in 2006, and
will need new volunteers. This issue is covered in detail
below.
Treasurer's Report. Chris Georgi reported that there is a
total of $2,501.71 in the current account balance.
Secretary's Report. Minutes for the 6 September 2005 Board
meeting were approved.
Board Composition and Officers.
Nominations are as follows:
Vice President: Larry Hart, Jim Egerton, and Robert Bourke.
Treasurer: Richard Pagnillo.
Secretary: Jim Egerton and Nathan Bitz.
Board Members: Milt Bank.
After discussion the following actions were agreed:
Vice President: John Alich to discuss interest in Vice
President position with candidates and Scott Jasper. The
conclusion of those discussions is that Scott Jasper will
continue to serve through December of 2006 at which time a
decision will be made.
Richard Pagnillo will plan to relieve Chris Georgi as
Treasurer around June of 2006 when Chris completes his tour
of duty in the area.
Jim Egerton will relieve Norm Channel as secretary in
January 2006.
Student Information Fair. The next information fair is in
January 2006. Volunteers will be needed to man the booth.
This will be important with the upcoming Blue Chip dinner..
Future Events Plans Strategy.
Army/Navy Golf - Seven two man teams from each school to
compete on 11 November. Tom Mercer organized this years
match at Monterey Pines.
Army/Navy Game – Dick Miller agreed to take the lead on
getting the word out and set up for the event.
Blue Chip Dinner - The event is booked at Rancho Cañada on 4
Feb 2006. Scott Jasper along with the events group will
again work on this. Subsequent to the Board Meeting an
events council meeting was called for December 14 to
finalize plans for the event.
The following additional events are planned for 2006:
All-service academy event for May; Wine tasting in August,
Stanford/Navy game in September, Army/Navy golf in November,
and the Army/Navy game in December.
New Business. None beyond the new initiatives noted above.

6 Sep 2005
Meeting Objectives. The USNA Alumni Association, Monterey
Bay Chapter Board, met at the Naval Postgraduate School on 6
September 2005. The meeting was presided over by Chapter
President John Alich. Purposes of the meeting were to submit
Board officer reports, discuss Board composition and
officers, seek volunteers for the next Student Information
Fair, report on the August wine tasting, and plan for future
Chapter events.
Attendees. John Alich '64, Matt Boensel '80, Jack Branson
'50, Norm Channell '55, Jim Egerton '56, George East ‘50,
Chris Georgi ‘96, Scott Jasper ‘80, and Greg Lask ‘96.
President's Report. Chapter President John Alich reported
that the Academy supports the objectives and initiatives
recommended by the Pentagon Task Force assessing harassment.
The Task Force recommendations have been widely reported by
the media.
The wine tasting was enjoyed by the limited number of
attendees, 47 paid, 37 attended. The fees paid by those who
were unable to attend at the last minute were used to
purchase wine for tasting during the social hour. The cheese
and fruit plate provided by the winery was excellent. The
Board thanked Scott Jasper, who made the arrangements for
such a pleasant afternoon.
John Pfeiffer, the USNA Blue and Gold Officer has agreed to
address the Board and/or members on the current program at
USNA. This will be scheduled at a later date.
Treasurer's Report. Chris Georgi reported that there is a
total of $2450.71 in the current account balance. This is
adequate to cover anticipated needs.
Secretary's Report. Minutes for the 8 June 2005 Board
meeting were approved.
Board Composition and Officers. John Alich noted that the By
Laws call for the Board members and Officers to serve three
year staggered terms commencing 1 June 2004 to 31 May 2007.
He also noted that the Board is responsible for recruiting
prospective Board members and Officers, submitting these
nominees to the Chapter membership for approval. John
advised that Chapter Vice President Scott Jasper has asked
to be replaced because of job and family conflicts, and
Chapter Treasurer Chris Georgi will be PCS in mid 2006.
Chapter Secretary Norm Channell advised that he will likely
be elected President of the Monterey County MOAA in
December, and may not be able to fulfill adequately the
position of Board Secretary. John Alich noted that some
Board members had not attended the Board meetings, and that
he recommended they be considered for replacement. John
recommended a Board sub-group be established to suggest
nominations for the Board to consider. Norm Channell
recommended establishment of a nominating committee, and the
Board agreed to accomplish that. Matt Boensel agreed to
chair the Committee comprised of himself, and additional
volunteers John Alich, Jack Branson, and Chris Georgi. Matt
Boensel to draft an email seeking nominations for the Board.
Student Information Fair. The next information fair is on 20
September. Chris Georgi will send an email seeking
volunteers for this event.
Future Events Plans Strategy. The Board discussed at length
the limited attendance at events relative to the
organizational efforts requirement, and concluded that a
quarterly event was the most that made sense. One major
event per year, the Blue Chip Dinner, was agreed to. Limited
participation by the membership continues to be a concern of
the Board, particularly given its limited member time
resources.
Veterans Day Golf - Tom Mercer is handling for Dick Miller.
Army/Navy Game - Similar to last year, at NPS.
Air Force/Navy Game - Possible event, at NPS, in October.
Blue Chip Dinner - Tentatively set for 4 February 2006 at
Rancho Canada. Volunteer needed to take the lead.
Events with Other Service Academy Alumni Associations.
Norm Channell attended the service academy information
evening at North Salinas High School, sponsored by
Congressman Sam Farr. John Pfeiffer, the USNA Blue and Gold
Officer, represented USNA. The presentations by each academy
rep were excellent and very enthusiastic. The audience asked
several questions and generally seemed interested. Norm
advised that he was impressed by most of the service
presentations, but was mildly disappointed by the limited
turnout. He noted that he has recommended to the
Congressman’s staffers that a similar event be scheduled for
the Monterey Peninsula.
New Business. None beyond the new initiatives noted above.
Scheduled meetings. Next Board meeting - 1700, 8 Nov 2005.

8 June 2005
Meeting Objectives
The USNA Alumni Association, Monterey Bay Chapter Board, met at
the Naval Postgraduate School on 8 June 2005. The meeting was
presided over by Chapter President John Alich. The purpose of
the meeting was to submit Board officer reports, discuss future
dues, student recruitment, the August wine tasting, and other
future Chapter events.
Attendees
John Alich '64, Matt Boensel '80, Bob Bourke ‘60, Jack Branson
'50, Norm Channell '55, Jim Egerton '56, and George East ‘50.
President's Report
Chapter President John Alich noted the difficulties encountered
regarding the social event scheduled for May at the Maritime
Museum, and the subsequent cancellation. Members who had
registered for the event were invited to the Alich home at the
time scheduled for the event. All Board members present agreed
that the social event hosted by John and his wife admirably
provided for the May social event, and commended them for
arranging the superb gathering.
John reported on his visit to Annapolis in April, noting that he
found the atmosphere and attitude at the Academy upbeat. There
is enthusiasm about next year’s football team, the first class
recruited by Paul Johnson. USNA has signed a contract with CSTV
to televise all home games. A new field house along with a
number of important facilities improvements are in various
stages of development.
A crucial issue for all the service academies is the drop off in
applicants which have now returned to pre 9/11 levels. USNA is
looking to local chapters to conduct information campaigns to
bolster applications. John also advised that the local West
Point Alumni Chapter had already sent an initiative to
Congressman Farr recommending the Congressman host a social
event for all interested applicants to the service academies.
John said that he had been in discussion with West Point
leadership and had committed to participate in the event. The
Board discussed the issue and agreed that this was an important
area of the Chapter mission that merited support..
Treasurer's Report
Chris Georgi was unable to attend due to classes. His email
report stated that there is $2126 in the current account
balance, and that there are 34 Chapter members who have paid
their 2005 dues down from 60 the prior year. The Board expressed
concern that while the dues are needed to support Chapter
activities they may be limiting participation. John will issue
another email request concerning dues.
Secretary's Report
Minutes for the 29 March 2005 Board meeting were approved as
submitted.
NPS Student Input
John Alich advised he had received student input that some NPS
students were inclined not to participate in Chapter functions
because the dues were high plus the expense of the events. There
is also the problem of the extensive studying required at NPS
and the relatively short time that the students are assigned to
NPS. After some discussion regarding the dues, it appeared a
reduction in dues for NPS and DLI students should be in order.
Dues
A motion was made and carried to offer dues of $10 per tour to
Alumni/Alumnae students at NPS and DLI, and to retain the $25 dues for
other members, at least for the present. Dues will be reviewed
again next year.
Student Information Fair
The next fair is on 29 June. Volunteers were solicited for this
event to man a desk at NPS to talk with students as prospective
Chapter members. Jim Egerton, Matt Boensel, and Norm Channell
volunteered to help.
Wine Tasting
Last summer’s successful wine tasting at Chateau Julien will be
repeated on 20 August 2005, 1400 to 1600. Cost will be $12 per
person for Chapter members and $17 for others.
Future Events Plans Strategy
Future plans include Veterans Day Golf against Army, gatherings
for the Army/Navy game, possibly the Air Force/Navy game in
October, and the next Blue Chip dinner in 2006.
Discussion was held regarding interest in, and desirability of
holding events with other service academy alumni associations.
It was generally agreed that such events would be desirable, but
that there are many considerations that need to be taken into
account. The initiative by the West Point Chapter to Congressman
Farr, noted above, appears to be a good move in this direction.
Chapter President John Alich advised that he would explore the
proposed Farr event as well as other possible opportunities.
New Business
None beyond new initiatives noted above.
Scheduled meeting
1. An Events Group meeting was scheduled for the last two weeks
in July 2005 to plan the Wine tasting
2. The next Board meeting was scheduled for 1700 on 6 September
2005.
There being no other pressing business, the meeting was
adjourned.

29 March 2005
The USNA Alumni Association, Monterey Bay Chapter Board, met at
the Naval Postgraduate School on 29 March 2005. The meeting was
presided over by Chapter President John Alich. Purpose of the
meeting was to review the Blue Chip Dinner, plan for a social
event in May, and discuss other future Chapter events.
Attendees. John Alich '64, Matt Boensel '80, Jack Branson '50,
Norm Channell '55, Jim Egerton '56, Chris Georgi '96, Scott
Jasper '80, and Dick Miller '50.
President's Report. Chapter President John Alich noted the great
success of the Blue Chip Dinner, and thanked those involved for
their efforts in helping to achieve this successful event. He
noted that our Chapter hosted nine potential midshipman and
their families, that we received valuable support from the Blue
and Gold Officer, and from the Naval Academy. He also stated
that he had received positive responses from the Naval Academy
and the parents.
John also advised that he, Bob Bourke, and Scott Jasper, had
again set up a desk at the NPS New Student Reception on 22
March, and that, despite some limits from the rain and the
location, managed to talk with about five students as
prospective Chapter members, recruiting one paid and two
promised. He noted that the Chapter is now on the NPS list for
future New Student Receptions.
John also reported that he had attended the West Point Founders
Day event on 11 March in the La Novia Room at NPS. The Founders
Day event was enjoyable, and featured a color guard, the DLI
Choir, recognition of the oldest/youngest members and a keynote
speaker.
Treasurer's Report. Chris Georgi reported that there is $1651 in
the current account balance. Chris also reported that there are
21 Chapter members who have paid their 2005 dues.
Secretary's Report. Minutes for the 13 January 2005 Board
meeting were approved as submitted. Chapter Secretary Norm
Channell submitted a draft article for the next Shipmate and
requested any input. John Alich offered to coordinate regarding
any photos of the Blue Chip dinner suitable for Shipmate.
May Event. A discussion was held regarding the May Chapter
event. It was agreed that the next event would be held at the
Maritime Museum on 21 May, 1800-2000, but cost is an issue. A
discussion followed regarding the nature of the event and its
cost. Dick Miller moved that the President negotiate the cost,
and if the price were appropriate, book the Museum. Tom Mercer's
help will be enlisted to negotiate with the museum. The Chapter
will provide wine and ask attendees to bring pot luck finger
food to share. Cost will be $5 for chapter members and
spouse/guest, $20 for non-members. After further discussion, the
motion carried unanimously.
August Event. Agreement was reached to repeat the successful
wine tasting at Chateau Julien as the Chapter event for August.
Veterans Day Golf. This event will be scheduled again on
Veterans Day. Dick Miller has agreed to organize the event with
Army.
Student Representation. Dick Miller recommended that the Board
try to recruit a student to sit on the Chapter Board to improve
our liaison with the NPS students. Scott Jasper volunteered to
check on potential candidates.
Events with other Services. Jack Branson suggested that the
Chapter arrange more events with alumni from the other service
academies.
Scheduled meetings. An Events Group meeting was scheduled for 10
May 2005. The next Board meeting is scheduled for 1700 on 8 June
2005.

Minutes of Meeting
Monterey Bay Chapter , U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association
13 January 2005
The USNA Alumni Association, Monterey Bay Chapter, met at the
Naval
Postgraduate School on 13 January 2005. The meeting was presided
over by Chapter
President John Alich. Primary purpose of the meeting was to
discuss the preparations
for the Blue Chip Dinner. Other items included the Emerald Bowl
events,
recruiting among NPS students, and a discussion regarding future
Chapter events.
Attendees. John Alich '64, Mat Boensel '80, Bob Bourke '60,
Jack Branson
'50, Norm Channell '55, George East '50, Jim Egerton '56,
Larry Hart '62,
Scott Jasper '80, Dick Miller '50, and Richard Paguillo 59.
John Pfeiffer,
local USNA Blue and Gold officer, was also present.
President's Report. Chapter President John Alich reported that
the Emerald
Bowl tailgate and the game were both highly successful, and well
run. He also
advised that he, Jack Branson, and Jim Egerton had set up a desk
at the NPS New
Student Reception, and that, despite some NPS scheduling
problems, managed to
talk with approximately 12 students as prospective Chapter
members. He noted
that the Chapter is now on the NPS list for future New Student
Receptions. John
also reported that a letter advising members of the new dues
will be sent out
the first week of February.
Secretary's Report. Minutes for 7 December 2004 Board Meeting
were approved
as submitted. Norm Channell requested input for the next
Shipmate article.
Treasurer's Report. Treasurer Chris Georgi was not able to
attend. A report
regarding those signed up for the Blue Chip Dinner was provided
Web Site. Jim Egerton advised that he is looking for input for
the Chapter web
site, and is making refinements to the site as it evolves.
Blue Chip Dinner. John Alich and Scott Jasper provided an update
on the Dinner,
to be held on 29 January 2005, at Rancho Canada. Letters have
been sent to all
Chapter members who do not have email addresses. So far, 21 USNA
grads and
spouse/guests have signed up. Contributions for prospective
candidates are at
$700 permitting support for 17.5 candidates/parents (out of 24
potential
prospects). John Alich noted that the current numbers equate to
one USNA couple for
each candidate family, and opined that two or three USNA couples
per candidate
family would be ideal.
A discussion followed regarding the need to increase attendance
at the Dinner,
especially by recent USNA grads. Again, all Board members were
requested to
use personal contacts. A motion was made and approved to offer
reduced rates of
$30 per person, with no sponsor requirement, to grads from the
class of 2000 or
more recent. Scott Jasper indicated that he would spread the
word regarding
the Dinner to the NPS staff and students.
Request was made for more volunteers to assist in the various
Blue Chip Dinner
functions. Those interested were invited to attend the next
Dinner planning
session (see below).
USMA Founders' Day Dinner. Chapter President John Alich
advised that a
notice will be sent to all USNA Chapter members regarding this
event scheduled for
11 March 2005. It is planned to send this letter out the latter
part of
January.
Future Event. A discussion was held regarding the next Chapter
event. It was
generally agreed that the next event would be held at the
Maritime Museum in
late May, probably 14 or 21 May. The exact nature of the event
is to be

AA Monterey Bay Chapter. This account is currently held by the
Monterey Credit Union. Motion made and approved.
Survey Results. Chapter President Alich passed out copies of
the membership survey returns, and discussed the conclusions.
There were 37 responses from 70 paid up members. There appears
to be interest in some type of quality social event. Response
was mixed regarding location - NPS or elsewhere, and spouse
or non-spouse. Some expressed interest in a monthly luncheon,
while others preferred quarterly. Blue and Gold dinner rated
high, but the results were mixed. Maritime Museum function was
rated very high.
Quarterly Social Event. President Alich proposed the Chapter
Board approve organization of a quarterly social event, the
next one to be the USN/USAF game party at NPS. The proposal
regarding the quarterly event was approved by consensus.
Activities Committee. Larry Hart has volunteered to be Chair
of the Activities Committee.
Army Navy Golf Tournament. Dick Miller discussed this event.
He has 12 players at present. To be held on Veterans Day at
the Navy Golf Course.
Army-Navy Game Party. Discussion was held regarding the Army-Navy
Game party. Consensus was to hold it at NPS, and to seek MWR
assistance.

to be held the first week in March, probably 5 or 12 March.
Anticipate 120 attendees. Arrangements to include the DLI Choir,
and a Navy color guard. Discussion followed regarding cost,
location, and invitations to USNA prospects. Quail Lodge or
Rancho Canada seemed to be the most favored. Most Board members
appeared to be in favor of covering costs of USNA prospects.
(Note: date has been changed to 29 Jan 2005.)
Maritime Museum. Plan was proposed to have the next function,
after the Blue and Gold Dinner, at the Maritime Museum. Suggestion
was made that Tom Mercer might assist.

programs for administrative costs, etc.. Motion made and

date. Motion made and carried to approve and for President Alich
to submit to USNAAA.

web site due to complexity. Jim Egerton offered his expertise,
which was gratefully accepted.
Regarding how to contact Chapter members, it was decided to
mail information to all members who do not have email.
The next Board meeting was scheduled for 1700 on 7 December
2004.
There being no other pressing business, the meeting was adjourned.
